Memory
I produced a series of branded films with Manchester-based production company Bearded Fellows, for a brand called Home Instead. As part of this, I made a film with my 92 year-old grandpa, who has dementia. We talked about memory, the loss of it, and honesty, and we laughed about the driving test he was never going to pass. I enjoyed speaking to him in more depth than we ever get to when our big, busy family is around. I enjoyed his hope and optimism. And what I enjoyed most was how much he got out of it - he said it felt like therapy, and that every person who has dementia should have access to an opportunity to tell their story. It made me think about how storytelling can uplift people, and can be cathartic. Having someone ask about your life, being able to share your experiences and frame them for someone else.
